The painter Vincent van Gogh (born 30 maart 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands – suicide on 29 juli 1890 in France). The painter Edvard Munch (born 12 December 1863 Kingdom of Sweden and Norway – died 23 January 1944 in Oslo Norway). They lived around the same time. Vincent van Gogh became a known painter after his death, not before.
The two painters have much in common, not just their similar (development of) painting style. Both Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch have a museum dedicated to them. This is something significant. Not many painters have a museum with their name on it.
Vincent van Gogh is most known for the little detail of him cutting of parts of his left ear, or the mystery of what actually happened there. Some say it happened in a fight with his friend Gauguin. Others claim he cut off his own ear, due to the desease tinnitus. Another unclarity is how much of Van Gogh’s left ear was cut off. According to his sister in law, he had cut off only the lower part of his ear. Other studies claim, he had cut off half the ear.
Three self-portraits of Vincent van Gogh.
Three portrets of Edvard Munch.
Three portrets of art dealer Theo van Gogh. On all pictures the right ear is not well visible.
There is a picture of Vincent van Gogh from 1866 (right).
I sometimes wonder if Vincent van Gogh, brother Theo van Gogh and colleague Edvard Munch could have been switching roles or maybe photos one way or the other or both …. Art dealer Theo van Gogh looks a lot like the young Edvard Munch. Vincent van Gogh shares some facial similarities with the older Edvard Munch. Vincent van Gogh painted most of his work, while he was in France, the last few years of his life.
Both Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch had serious mental health issues and have been hospitalized for it. Edvard Munch is said to have considered suicide when his father died. Vincent van Gogh father died in in 1885. Five years later Vincent van Gogh would commit suicide, though this story has multiple interpretations (like with the ear).
Both Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch were in Paris in the 1880’s. Vincent went in March 1886, to live with his brother Theo van Gogh, in his house on Rue Lepic 54 in Montmartre. Theo van Gogh was an art dealer. He among others organized sales for painter Hans Heyerdahl from Norway. So there is a link from Vincent to Norway.
Edvard Munch went to Paris in 1889, for Exposition Universelle. He returned home later that year, due to the death of his father. In 1896 Munch went back to Paris.
In short, both were financed by others to paint at an age most people make their own money. The result was average artwork, which is now being displayed as if it is amazing. But that is just an opinion.
ps. Note how Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch look alike in the pictures.
pps. Note how it seems Edvard Munch’s one ear is a bit shorter compared to the right ear.
ppps.
